Seventh Day Adventism and Buddhism

The Thursday night Bible studies have officially come to a close for the year. It was a great time with great people and a great God. Good discussions and God's word brought us to a deeper understanding of what we believe as well as how to talk to people from other beliefs. Here are the final two documents, SDA and Buddhism:

The Past Few Weeks

We've started up the Thursday night Bible study again and we've been discussing different religions and how exactly they are different from what the Bible says. We've had some great discussions and have learned a lot. God has definitely been faithful!

This week (Thursday, October 15th) we'll be discussing the World Mission Society Church of God, also known as the "Mother of God" church.

Here are links to the handouts from previous weeks. Some of these may be a little confusing so if you have any questions, please feel free to post on the blog here under the "comments" section or talk to me (Jon) and hopefully we can clear them up!

The Fall (the season, not the sin)

Things are starting up again at Joongang and we're getting ready for the regular mid-week studies. There's a group planning on teaching about prayer on the first Wednesday of every month. Next Wednesday will be the first week - meet in the EWS office (3rd floor) at 8:00 PM on September 16th.

September 17th will be the first Thursday night Bible study. We're going to start in on cults (for real this time), with the first one being Mormonism. I highly recommend you bring along the handouts from the previous session as well be referring to and using them on a rather frequent basis. It'll be on the 3rd floor at 8:00.

In addition, there will also be a cell group starting in Hwasun on Wednesday nights for all interested. It will be held at Josh & Becky Hastey's home.

Lance & Marilyn will also be hosting a cell group on Friday nights in Gwangju for anyone interested. Contact the respective people for more details.

All in all, a very eventful fall! I encourage you to find something to do and get connected.

Enjoy!

The End is Near! This Thursday, to be precise.

Yes, you heard it here first - the last Bible study before the summer break is this Thursday, July 16th. It's been a great time with some great things that God has done through His word and His Spirit. On Thursday, we'll have a time of discussion to review some of the topics we've covered. Next Thursday, July 23rd, we're going to have dinner or coffee together and just hang out as a "semester end" party, after which we'll break for the summer. Hope to see you there! Thursday night, 8:00, 3rd floor.

Here are the discussion questions for this week:

1. Are you worried about the end times?
2. What do you see your role in our church today being?
3. What are some ways you / we can be generous?
4. How should you give your money offerings? To the church? To poor people? To pastors or missionaries?
5. What difference is there your life being saved by grace as opposed to saved by works?
6. Should we recognize people as they are gifted and called to serve in the church (Ephesians 4:11 – Pastors, Teachers, Apostles, Prophets and Evangelists)? (i.e. Should they have the title on their office door?)
7. How has your view of the church changed over the course of this study?

Something will happen in the fall (Lord willing), with the dates, times and topics still yet to be decided. Stay tuned for more details!

June 11th, 18th & 25th - The Church

Here is the handout that we will be discussing over a three week period. Unfortunately, due to my (Jon's) tardiness, the handout is just going up now. For anyone that missed it, we had a great time last week (June 11th) discussing how the Bible describes the church. We touched on such issues as:

-The church as a family
-Lawsuits & criminal abuse in the church
-The church & money

It was a really good time & God really spoke to us all through His word.

For those that would like, here's the handout:

This week (June 18th) there is actually a bit of homework. Please read points 1 - 13 in the document (everything up to Church Structure), including the Scripture references, and be prepared to discuss your opinions. Which church is the real church? How do you know if a church is "Christian" or not?

Hope to see you there!

June 4th - Salvation Part 2

This past week (May 28th) we started discussing salvation - how God is a holy God, He judges the earth fairly, we are sinful, the penalty for sin is death, Christ died to save us, we are saved by grace through faith, our salvation is secure but we are warned against falling away. At the end of this life is a very real heaven and hell and each person will spend eternity in one of these places.

Most of the time was taken up with looking at various Scriptures and so little time was left for discussion. As a result, this week (June 4th) we will be having a discussion regarding salvation - how can you know you are saved? Can you lose your salvation? Is salvation really by faith alone? Questions like these and any others you want to bring will be discussed.

Hope to see you there!
